March 10, 2026---Dr. Muhammad Shafique, Associate Professor at the Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), University of the Punjab, has been awarded a research grant of PKR 3.8 million by the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) for his research project titled “Genetic Etiology of Suicidal Behavior with Serotonin Related Genes in Psychiatric Patients.” The project has been approved under PSF Project No. PSF/Res/P-PU/Bio (701).
The Centre appreciates the Pakistan Science Foundation for its continued support in promoting scientific research in Pakistan and congratulates Dr. Muhammad Shafique (Principal Investigator) and Dr. Abida Shehzadi (Co-Principal Investigator) on securing this competitive grant.
The project focuses on identifying genetic associations between suicidal behavior and specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes related to the serotonergic and GABAergic systems. Identification of these SNP markers may assist clinicians and forensic experts in early screening, risk assessment, counseling, and prevention of suicidal behavior. The findings may also support forensic investigations by helping distinguish suicide from homicide in complex cases.
This research reflects CEMB’s continued commitment to advancing genetic and biomedical research that addresses critical mental health challenges and contributes to improved clinical and forensic practices.
